Is a cultured pearl acceptable for astrological Moti, or does it have to be natural?
Classical Vedic texts specifically call for a natural pearl for astrological purposes — a cultured pearl, while a completely legitimate gem for jewelry, is generally not considered equivalent for this specific use. Confirm this with your astrologer, and insist on a certificate stating "natural" if buying for Moti.
Can I tell a natural pearl from a cultured one just by looking?
No — this is one of the few cases in gemology where visual inspection, even by experts, cannot reliably make the determination. It requires laboratory X-ray/microradiography testing of the pearl's internal growth structure.
Why are natural pearls so much more expensive than cultured pearls of similar size?
Every natural pearl is an entirely chance find with no human-controlled production process, making them dramatically rarer than cultured pearls, which are deliberately farmed at scale. Price reflects that rarity far more than visual appearance.
What should a pearl certificate specifically state for astrological use?
It should explicitly state "natural pearl" (not cultured) based on internal structure testing, along with weight and any treatment (natural pearls are sometimes lightly bleached or polished, which should also be disclosed).
Is size or natural-origin more important for astrological Moti?
Natural origin is the non-negotiable requirement; size (ratti/carat weight) is the secondary consideration your astrologer would typically specify based on your birth chart.
Are Basra pearls still being produced today?
No — natural Gulf pearl fishing effectively ended in the early-to-mid 20th century. Pearls sold under the Basra name today are almost always antique/estate stones, and origin claims should be independently verified.
