How to Buy a Genuine Blue Sapphire (Neelam)
Blue sapphire (Neelam) is corundum colored blue by trace iron and titanium — one of the most in-demand colored stones worldwide, and in Vedic astrology considered the fastest and most powerful-acting gemstone of all nine, traditionally trialled for a short period before committing to long-term wear.
Most fine blue sapphire in the trade today is heat-treated, a long-accepted practice that improves color and clarity and should always be stated explicitly on an independent certificate. Unheated stones — especially from Kashmir, or fine untreated Ceylon material — are rare and significantly more valuable; if a listing doesn't say "no heat" plainly, assume it's treated until confirmed otherwise.
Color drives price more than any other factor: a pure, medium-dark "cornflower" or "royal" blue is the benchmark — too dark and the stone reads almost black under normal light, too light and it looks washed out or grayish. Clarity and carat weight follow, and then origin: Kashmir sapphire commands legendary premiums, but the historic Kashmir mines were largely exhausted by the 1930s, so genuine Kashmir material at real scale is essentially unavailable today — Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and Burma are the realistic top tier for buyers now.
Because Neelam is traditionally considered the fastest-acting of the nine Navratna gemstones — for better or worse — classical guidance is to trial it for a short period (commonly a few days, worn against the skin) before committing to it long-term, and to confirm with your astrologer that Saturn is a functional benefic for your specific ascendant before purchasing at all, since a mismatched Neelam is considered more consequential than most other gemstone mismatches.
