How to Buy a Genuine Pearl (Moti)

A cultured pearl is a completely legitimate gem — an oyster or mollusk grows it around a bead or tissue nucleus inserted by a human, then the pearl itself forms through the same natural biological process as a wild pearl. A genuinely natural pearl, by contrast, forms with zero human intervention at any stage and is exceedingly rare in today's market, commanding a price many multiples above cultured material of similar appearance. For most everyday jewelry use, a fine cultured pearl is the right, honest choice. For Vedic astrological use specifically, however, classical texts call for a natural pearl — making this single distinction the most important thing to get right when buying Moti, more important than size, shape, or luster.

For natural pearls, value is driven by size, shape (round is most valuable, followed by near-round and drop shapes), luster (the sharpness and depth of light reflection off the surface), surface cleanliness (freedom from blemishes and marks), and origin — historically, South Sea and Basra (Persian Gulf) natural pearls are the trade's reference points.

Crucially, visual inspection alone — even by an experienced jeweller — cannot reliably distinguish a natural pearl from a cultured one; the difference lies in the internal growth structure, which requires X-ray or laboratory microradiography to confirm. If you're buying for astrological purposes, an independent gemological report stating "natural, no indication of treatment" is not optional — it's the entire basis of the purchase.
