The three labs that matter

• GIA (Gemological Institute of America) — the most recognized name worldwide; its colored-stone reports document identity, measurements, and treatment level.
• IGI (International Gemological Institute) — widespread on commercial and mid-tier stones in India; solid, verifiable documentation at every price level.
• GRS (GemResearch Swisslab) — the collector's preference for colored stones, adding origin determination (Colombia, Zambia, Afghanistan) that GIA and IGI reports typically don't attempt.

All three are independent of the seller — that independence is the entire point. A jeweller's own "certificate of authenticity" grades their own inventory and is not certification in any meaningful sense.

Verify any certificate from Kolkata in four steps

1. Find the report number on the certificate (and laser-inscribed on some stones' girdles).
2. Go directly to the lab's own website — GIA Report Check, IGI Verify, or GRS Check — never a link the seller provides.
3. Enter the number and compare every line: carat weight, dimensions, shape, color description, treatment level.
4. Match the physical stone against those dimensions. A genuine certificate paired with a different stone is the oldest trick in the colored-stone trade.

Red flags that end the conversation

• A seller who discourages or delays independent verification.
• "The lab report is extra" — grading exists before an honest sale, not after it as an upsell.
• Photocopied or laminated-only certificates with no verifiable number.
• Treatment described verbally as "standard oiling" while no document states it.
