Kashmir Sapphire
Kashmir sapphire is the most legendary origin in the entire gemstone trade — a velvety, saturated cornflower blue mined for barely five decades starting in the 1880s and now essentially unobtainable at scale.
The original Kashmir deposit was discovered after a landslide in 1881 and was largely worked out by the 1930s; genuine Kashmir sapphire that appears on the market today is almost always estate or antique material being resold, verified through specialized lab origin-determination testing. Because the supply is fixed and finite, prices for confirmed Kashmir material are set by rarity as much as by beauty.
