Ethiopia, particularly Wollo Province, emerged as a major new opal source in the late 2000s, producing vivid material at a more accessible price point than Australian stones.
Much Ethiopian opal is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb water and temporarily change appearance or clarity — a distinctive characteristic worth understanding before purchase, since it isn't a defect but does require different care than non-hydrophane Australian material.
