What is an opal doublet or triplet, and is it a bad thing to buy?
A doublet or triplet is a thin slice of natural opal bonded to a backing (and, for triplets, capped with a protective dome) — a legitimate, more affordable product as long as it's clearly disclosed, but it should never be priced as if it were solid opal.
Why does my Ethiopian opal look different after wearing it in water?
Much Ethiopian opal is hydrophane and can temporarily absorb water, altering its clarity or color until it dries out again — this is a normal characteristic of the material, not damage, but it's worth knowing about before you buy.
Why is a small black opal sometimes more expensive than a much larger white opal?
Body tone and play-of-color intensity matter far more than size — a dark body tone makes colors appear to glow, so even a small vivid black opal can outvalue a larger, weaker-colored white opal many times over.
How do I know if my opal is solid or a doublet/triplet?
An independent gemological report will state the construction type explicitly — solid, doublet, or triplet — since this isn't always obvious from the front of a set stone.
Is Ethiopian opal lower quality than Australian opal?
Not inherently — it can show excellent play-of-color, but it's often hydrophane and requires different care, and the two origins are judged by the same play-of-color and body-tone standards rather than one being categorically better.
