How to Buy a Genuine Peridot

There's no heat treatment, irradiation, or fracture-filling convention for peridot the way there is for most colored gemstones — the color you see is the color the stone formed with underground, full stop. This makes peridot one of the most straightforward gems in the catalog from a disclosure standpoint: a certificate's job is largely confirming natural origin and describing color and clarity rather than reporting any enhancement.

Because there's no treatment question, buying decisions center entirely on color saturation, clarity, and size. Color saturation matters most — a vivid, pure green with minimal yellow or brown undertone is the benchmark, prized well above washed-out or overly yellowish-green material. Clarity comes next, and peridot commonly shows small internal inclusions sometimes described as "lily pad" inclusions; these are generally acceptable and even expected in small-to-medium stones but should be minimal in finer material. Carat weight matters significantly too, since large, clean, well-colored peridot over roughly 10 carats is genuinely rare — most commercial material runs small, making bigger clean stones command a steep premium.

Because peridot is never treated, don't expect or pay extra for an "unenhanced" claim the way you might for ruby or sapphire — it's simply the baseline for every peridot on the market. Instead, spend your evaluation time on color: compare stones side by side in consistent lighting, since the difference between a vivid pure green and a duller yellowish-green peridot is often more visible in direct comparison than in isolation.
