Burma, particularly the Mogok Valley, has been the world's reference source for fine ruby for centuries — the historic origin of true "pigeon blood" red.
Mogok's deposits produce ruby with a distinctive fluorescence that makes the color appear to glow even in dim light, the trait most associated with the pigeon-blood description. Burmese material commands the highest per-carat premiums in the ruby trade, especially in larger unheated sizes, and independent origin determination is often requested by serious buyers given how much value rides on the claim.
