Zircon: Every Question, Answered
The complete question set from zircon buyers — buying, pricing, certification, and origins in one place.
Is zircon the same thing as cubic zirconia (CZ)?
No — they're completely different materials despite the similar name. Natural zircon is a genuine mineral gemstone with real value and fire; cubic zirconia is a man-made diamond simulant with essentially no resale value as a gemstone.
How can I tell zircon apart from diamond or white sapphire myself?
Look closely through the stone with a loupe for 'doubling' of the back facet edges — a visible effect caused by zircon's high birefringence that diamond, cubic zirconia, and white sapphire don't show.
Why does blue zircon vary so much in price?
Color saturation and cut quality are the main drivers — a vivid, well-cut blue zircon costs considerably more than a pale or carelessly cut stone of the same size, and facet wear from zircon's brittleness can also affect value.
What's the most important thing a zircon certificate should confirm?
That the stone is genuine natural zircon, not synthetic cubic zirconia — this single distinction matters more for zircon than for almost any other gem, given how often the two are confused.
Is Cambodian zircon always heat-treated?
The blue zircon associated with Cambodia is typically heat-treated from brownish rough, while Sri Lanka is a more common source for natural, untreated zircon in other colors — worth checking the specific stone's treatment status rather than assuming from origin alone.
