How to Buy a Genuine Zircon

Most blue zircon on the market has been heat-treated from brownish or reddish-brown rough — a long-standing, accepted, and disclosed practice, similar in spirit to how tanzanite is treated. Natural, untreated zircon also exists across a range of colors including red, orange, and colorless, and should be identified as such on an independent certificate rather than assumed.

Color and clarity drive most of zircon's value, with vivid, evenly saturated blue being the most commercially sought-after color, followed by red, orange, and fine colorless material prized for its diamond-like brilliance. Cut quality matters more here than in many gems because zircon is genuinely brittle, especially at its facet edges, so a well-executed cut that protects vulnerable edges holds up better and looks better than a careless one. Carat weight follows the usual pattern of rising value at larger sizes.

One useful, genuinely diagnostic trick when evaluating zircon: its unusually high birefringence causes visible "doubling" of the back facet edges when you look closely through the stone from certain angles — a phenomenon you can sometimes spot with a simple loupe, and one that helps confirm you're looking at genuine zircon rather than diamond, cubic zirconia, or white sapphire, none of which show that same doubling effect.
